I know one thing: I need to do more…
Yes it is a bit of a spin on the ancient Greek phrase know as the Socratic Socratic paradox,:
“I know that I know nothing”
“I know one thing: that I know nothing”
Early on I said that I wanted make an effort to record my experience as I move along in this adventure… This entry is not a particularly “good news” one, as I am currently struggling a bit… Good or bad here it goes…
After creating a couple of sites I thought would get SOME traffic… Surprisingly (maybe not after you read below) very little has come in…
- Is my site working?
- Am I recording the traffic correctly?
- Is my content being indexed?
- Do I have the right keywords?
- Are my ads working?
- What have I missed?
- Are the sites not interesting enough?
- Am I just bad at picking niches?
(Notice the progression? from outside to inside causes)
So many other questions pop to mind, as to why, how, what…
Most of my initial startup time, has been spent on research, listening to podcasts, videos, reading articles, keyword and online research and such… (I have written about these in past articles). Most of the info points at the fact that you can start getting traffic, in a short period of time (within weeks) if you focus on good unique content… Others tell you need to be patient, and keep on going, learning and in time you will have the breakthrough moment… Some even mention a two year timeline… I have to say, this is easier to listen to, than actually going through the process… Academically you understand it, practically is another story! (Isn’t that always the case?)
A while back, I read the book “Outliers: The Story of Success” and oh-boy does it really apply in this case! There is no substitute for actually DOING the work — 10,000 times if you want to become an expert!…
I feel like a fish out of water, but I like it!
I must now pause and reflect on how I’ve gone about doing this so far.
I have written about my goals for this process, back in this blog entry. My two short term goals included:
- To receive 3 consecutive months of passive income (No specific amount is intentional)
- To actively learn (aka doing) as much as I can about this medium and its potential avenues
I am definitely and without a doubt, I am fully achieving #2. However for #1: I know it is naïve of me (knowing in theory is one thing, but to really know it, you have to experience) but I realize now that:
Income comes from conversions from traffic you attract.
Side note: So many layers in that statement! A blog post will be forthcoming on this topic soon! [Placeholder Link Here]
There are many different skills that come together when approaching this business. Some thoughts on the each of the different areas follow…
(I had to split the blog into several parts, as it became a bit too long…
