 {"id":1960,"date":"2013-01-10T22:03:23","date_gmt":"2013-01-10T22:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ebiz98.com\/?p=450"},"modified":"2023-07-19T13:33:52","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T20:33:52","slug":"wordpress-site-configuration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/wordpress-site-configuration\/","title":{"rendered":"WordPress Site Configuration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WordPress is a pretty amazing platform\u2026.&nbsp;&nbsp; I continue to be amazed at the ecosystem it has\u2026&nbsp;&nbsp; There are over 59 Million WordPress sites in the world, and over 23,000 plugins!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WordPressPLuginCount.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"244\" height=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WordPressPLuginCount.png\" alt=\"WordPressPLuginCount\" class=\"wp-image-2081\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WordpressSitesCount.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"244\" height=\"90\" src=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/WordpressSitesCount.png\" alt=\"WordpressSitesCount\" class=\"wp-image-2082\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, I have done several dozen WordPress sites, and thought it would be a good idea to share how I typically configure (plugins) these up..&nbsp; It is not intended to be a step-by-step tutorial, but rather more of a description of what I use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good or bad, this is how I do it and it is working for me so far\u2026&nbsp;&nbsp; I am always looking to improve things I do, so I welcome any\/all constructive comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, some basic guidelines I follow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Free is best!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use clean and simple themes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No Modifications to theme templates. (Sometime I break this guideline\u2026 )<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must be found within Plugins \u2013&gt; Add New-&gt; Search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plugin must have been updated at least within the last 200 days.<br>(will not look at those that are over a year old!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note 1:&nbsp; Always install the latest WordPress version (As of this writing v3.5) !&nbsp;&nbsp; My hosting provider has a auto-install WP script which include <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/wp-super-cache\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">WP Super Cache<\/a>.&nbsp; It is highly recommended to use Caching to improve your site\u2019s performance\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Disclaimer:&nbsp;&nbsp; I have spent a lot of time researching plugins,&nbsp; what works and does not work.&nbsp;&nbsp; The listed items are my current favorites alternatives.&nbsp; I have not&nbsp; received any money or favoritisms for the items recommended below.&nbsp; There are no affiliate,&nbsp; PPC or commission revenue&nbsp; links on any of the items in this post.&nbsp; They are all FREE, although I recommend you donate something to the ones you use\/like. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the hosting company, or theme,&nbsp; I pick, and depending on the type of blog I am creating, these are the typical plugins I look at installing (generally in this order):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Remove: Hello Dolly Plugin.&nbsp; &#8212;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: large;\">Remove:&nbsp; Jetpack by WordPress.com<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/backwpup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BackWPup Plugin<\/span><\/a>: WordPress Backup and more..<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Absolutely indispensable to have regular backups of all of your WordPress (themes, plugins, content files, database and more).&nbsp;&nbsp; It provides many choices of backup including DropBox, Amazon, and many more\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/wordpress-access-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">WP Access Control Plugin<\/a><\/strong>:&nbsp; Restrict Pages &amp; Posts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Great for providing a way to restrict pages, posts, custom post types, menus and widgets to members, nonmembers or specific roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/sociable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Sociable Plugin<\/span><\/a>: Automatically add share links to posts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Provides your users with an easy selection of choices for your favorite social bookmarking sites as to where to share your post to\u2026 Adds a small customizable banner at the bottom of each post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/pretty-link\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Pretty Link Lite Plugin<\/span><\/a>: \u2013 Shrink &amp; Track any URL within your own domain.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Gives you the ability to shrink, track and share any URL on the Internet from within WordPress. Any URL can be converted into yoursite.com\/&lt;choice_url&gt;. In addition to creating clean links, Pretty Link tracks each hit on your URL and provides a full, detailed report of where the hit came from, the browser, OS and host.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/wp-to-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">WP to Twitter Plugin:<\/span><\/a>Auto-posts Twitter update when you update your blog<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Includes a widget for displaying your tweets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>using your chosen URL shortening service.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rich in features for customizing and promoting your Tweets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently looking at an alternative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/tweetable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tweetable Plugin<\/a>: Integrate Twitter with your WordPress blog.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason is that it includes automatically tweet new posts AND display your latest tweet in your sidebar. Interface is a bit better too! &#8211;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/antispam-bee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Antispam Bee Plugin<\/a><\/span>: to reduce comment and feedback spam.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This one should probably be at the top of the list, but I am still testing it\u2026 It does the job well, without captchas. Instructions and details are in German, but can easily overcome with Google Translate. Sidebar: Does not work with JetPack\u2019s comments \u2013 which is not a problem for me, as I do not use it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/erident-custom-login-and-dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Erident Custom Login and Dashboar Plugin:<\/span><\/a> Login Screen Customizer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing I do not like, is when I am finished with a site, the admin login shows WordPress logo on top of the login form\u2026 Somehow the work seems unfinished, and my customers always ask if they were logging into WordPress.com or their own site\u2026 This plugin fixes that problem! Customize completely your WordPress Login Screen and Dashboard easily. Add your company logo to login screen, change background images, colors, styles etc. Customize your Dashboard footer text also for complete branding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/google-analyticator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Google Analyticator Plugin<\/span><\/a>:&nbsp;&nbsp; to enable Google Analytics on the site.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adds the necessary JavaScript code and eliminates the need to edit your template code to begin logging. It includes several widgets for displaying data in the admin and on your blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/wp125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">WP125 Plugin<\/span><\/a>:&nbsp;&nbsp; 125&#215;125 Ad Management<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Help you manage your ads more efficiently! The plugin adds a new \u201cAds\u201d menu to the WordPress admin, which takes you into the ad management settings where you can add and remove ads.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Features include:&nbsp; One or two column ad display; Show as many ads as you want, either manual or random order; Keep track of how many times an ad is clicked ;&nbsp; schedule ads appearance windows; and much, much more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.org\/extend\/plugins\/quick-adsense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Quick AdSense Plugin<\/span><\/a>: \u2013 quick and flexible to auto-insert Google AdSense Ads<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It offers a quicker &amp; flexible way to insert Adsense or any Ads code into a blog post.
