 {"id":19993,"date":"2020-06-22T12:20:46","date_gmt":"2020-06-22T19:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moderneuc.com\/?p=19993"},"modified":"2026-02-18T13:02:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T20:02:23","slug":"windows-insiders-new-channels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/windows-insiders-new-channels\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Insiders:  New Channels"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsexperience\/2020\/06\/15\/introducing-windows-insider-channels\/\">announcement from Microsoft<\/a> last week regarding the way they release Windows and the ending of the Windows Insider Rings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Windows Insider was an open software testing program by Microsoft that allows users who own a valid license of Windows 10 to register for pre-release builds of the operating system previously only accessible to software developers. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsexperience\/2014\/10\/21\/were-rolling-out-our-first-new-build-to-the-windows-insider-program\/\">launched in October 2014<\/a> for users who wanted to be able to test and contribute feedback to improve the Windows 10 experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original concept was based on deployment rings some internal to Microsoft others available to willing users to test \/ contribute early releases &#8212;&nbsp;&nbsp; By September 2015, over 7 million people took part in the Windows Insider Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/46c4ts1tskv22sdav81j9c69-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/prod\/sites\/2\/2014\/10\/Ring2-1024x344.png\" alt=\"Ring2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They are transitioning from the existing frequency-based RING model\u00a0to a <strong>channel model <\/strong>aligning to the Office release model.\u00a0\u00a0 Microsoft has stated that this change had made to focus on quality and not\u00a0frequency.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So no more Windows Insiders &nbsp;&#8212;&nbsp; It is now all about <strong>channels<\/strong>!&nbsp; The new model is named&nbsp;<strong>Windows Insider Channels.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/46c4ts1tskv22sdav81j9c69-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/prod\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/2a5e88870862a87005e1018ced7ce331.png\" alt=\"Table showing similarities between channels for Windows and Office Insider Programs. \"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Windows Insiders, the move to channels will be easy. Microsoft will\u00a0automatically move devices\u00a0based on your current ring to the new channel that best corresponds with that experience as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Dev Channel<\/strong> (formerly know as Fast-ring)<\/li><li><strong>Beta Channel <\/strong>&nbsp;(formerly know as Slow-ring)<\/li><li><strong>Release Preview Channel<\/strong> (Release Preview ring)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/46c4ts1tskv22sdav81j9c69-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/prod\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/be63c233f03586473dc5a970f53d284d.png\" alt=\"Table for mapping the new Channels: Fast ring will become the Dev Channel, the Slow ring will become the Beta Channel, and the Release Preview ring will become the Release Preview Channel.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For production-based deployments, they are already in the channel model.&nbsp;There are currently two release channels for Windows 10:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Semi-Annual Channel <\/strong>receives feature updates twice per year.<\/li><li><strong>Long Term Servicing Channel<\/strong>, which is designed to be used only for specialized devices (which typically don&#8217;t run Office) such as those that control medical equipment or ATM machines, receives new feature releases every two to three years.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the many challenges and issues Microsoft has had with their past testing of &#8220;beta&#8221;
