 {"id":221,"date":"2010-03-07T03:39:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-07T03:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jorper98.wordpress.com\/?p=221"},"modified":"2021-01-29T22:50:20","modified_gmt":"2021-01-30T05:50:20","slug":"project-management-online-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/project-management-online-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Management Online Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most common questions I get asked is what tool to I use to manage projects while working with virtual teams.&#160;&#160; The answer I give, is typically, \u201cit depends a lot on the size of the project, and what you want to manage\u201d&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160; <\/p>\n<p>Collaboration, Project Management, Project Portfolio Management (PPM), Online Project Management, Project Management System (PMS) <\/p>\n<p>For many years, Microsoft Project, Excel and Word&#160; have been the de-facto tools for project managers.&#160; They work well (even for large projects)&#160; when a single, centralized and accountable project manager is in charge.&#160; Basic tools are simply not enough these days in which virtual teams, complex environments\/schedule, volumes of emails, digital documents are the norm.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>Over the years we have spent many thousands of dollars developing point solutions to allow us to more collaboratively manage project across teams.&#160;&#160; (I published a <a href=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/online-project-management-tool-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">simple set of requirements<\/a> back in 2008) <\/p>\n<p><em>A note about Microsoft\u2019s&#160; Office Project, Project&#160; Server and&#160; SharePoint:&#160;&#160; They are great tools but they are not quite integrated yet.&#160;&#160; Licensing,&#160; infrastructure and installation costs are still a barrier to their wide-spread use. (<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121023212520\/http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Microsoft\u2019s new Online Services<\/em><\/a><em> offerings are making these much easier and affordable)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am very happy to report, that a recent web search, reveals that the web-development community has taken notice, and there are now several online services that are beginning to be viable and affordable depending on your need and requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.comindwork.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.comindwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.comindwork.com\/<\/a>&#160; &#8211; I think this is the best value and feature set around.&#160;&#160; One centralized storage to keep all project artifacts in organized manner,&#160; Milestones, Status, Tasks, Time tracking, Issues, Risks, Discussions, Dashboards, Knowledgebase (wiki)&#160;&#160; &#8212; Very impressive for less than $2\/month per user. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/basecamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.basecamphd.com<\/a>&#160;&#160; &#8211; <em><strong>Our favorite for years!&#160; <\/strong><\/em>&#8212; web-based project management and collaboration tool for smaller projects and basic capabilities:To-dos, files, messages, schedules, and milestones. Very effective. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.Projjex.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.Projjex.com<\/a> -&#160; an online service that helps small businesses manage their clients, projects, tasks, time and invoices.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160; about $15\/user \/ month &#8211; <\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.teamworkpm.net\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teamworkpm.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.teamworkpm.net<\/a> Not a lot of experience with this one, but from the feature list deserves to be considered.&#160;&#160;&#160; The project notebook is a GREAT idea! &#8212; Unlimited users, bit charges based on the number of projects ( Free for 2, 15 for $24\/month; unlimited $149\/month)&#160; &#8211; <em>I do like the fact that they publish a roadmap, and are very open company and team.<\/em> <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.projectinsight.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.projectinsight.net<\/a> &#8211; Web-based project management software offers many strategic benefits such as: Project Scheduling, Resource Management,&#160; Document Management, Workflow and Approvals, Dashbaords, Time and Expense Tracking, Project Templates, Budgeting and Costing and Microsoft Outlook and Office Integration. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.5pmweb.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.5pmweb.com<\/a>&#160;&#160;&#160; &#8211; takes a bit to get use to the interface, but once you do \u2013 it is very intuitive.&#160; Nicely priced as well.&#160; <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liquidplanner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.liquidplanner.com<\/a>&#160; &#8212; ($35\/user\/month)&#160;&#160; Online scheduling, collaboration, time-tracking, and planning software&#160; &#8211; Have not used it but looks very good.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.easyprojects.net\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.easyprojects.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">http:\/\/www.easyprojects.net\/<\/a>&#160; nice set of features (Project Management, TimeSheets, Issue Tracking and others )&#160; but a bit expensive -&#160; $75&#160; per month for 5 \u201cAdmin\u201d users. &#8211;&#160; Unlimited \u201cCustomers Access\u201d which is defined as:&#160; view, add issues, upload\/dowload documents, and&#160; use message board)&#160; <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.workzone.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.workzone.com<\/a> -&#160; Very similar intrerface to basecamp \u2013 clean and direct.&#160;&#160;&#160; Nice set of basic features.&#160; <br \/>it is priced on a flat monthly fee for all users.&#160;&#160; (Not sure as to the price) <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aceproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.aceproject.com\/<\/a>&#160;&#160; A very compelling and complete set features. $1,000\/year unlimited users w\/ 2GB of storage ) <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrike.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.wrike.com<\/a>&#160; -&#160; their tag line is:&#160; \u201cPractical Project Management\u201d&#160; &#8211; Nice interface, but expensive.&#160; Not a full set of features, but getting better. Project management, collaboration \u2013 $9.95 for unlimited viewer,&#160; $9.95 per collaborator user.&#160; -&#160; time tracking is additional $7.95\/month.&#160;&#160; other charges apply as well. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thymer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.thymer.com<\/a>&#160; -&#160; focused around three things: an overview of what needs to be done next by whom when, what&#8217;s going on or has been done, and quickly adding and delegating new tasks.&#160;&#160; Pricing ranges from free to $50\/month for 10 users, unlimited projects. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.devshop.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.devshop.com<\/a>&#160; &#8211; a web-based project management application specifically designed for planning <strong>software projects<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.viewpath.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.viewpath.com<\/a>&#160; &#8211; Project and Event Management web-based system, <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cvprojects.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.cvprojects.com<\/a> \u2013 A simple and very inexpensive ($95\/year) web-based project management&#160; tool with Dashboard, Tasks, Issues, Risks, Changes and others. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fengoffice.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.fengoffice.com<\/a>&#160; More of a full collaboration \/ extranet site &#8211; $10\/user\/month; free for Guests users.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zoho.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.zoho.com<\/a>&#160;&#160; ($20\/user.\/month) <\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/unfuddle.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/unfuddle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">http:\/\/unfuddle.com\/<\/a>&#160;&#160; ($9\/month for 10 users, 4 active projects \u2013&gt; $99\/month&#160; unlimited\/50)<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><p>Web-based Project Management Applications (not hosted) <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.activecollab.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.activecollab.com<\/a> \u2013 Although not an online service, I am sneaking this one in, as it has excellent feature set and is fairly inexpensive &#8211; ($499 or $199&#160; for unlimited users)&#160;&#160;&#160; File sharing, discussions (set up like an online forum), task assignments, collaborative writing and reminders, time tracking, calendar&#160; ticket management and milestones. I like everything about this one.         <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dotProject.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.dotProject.net<\/a>&#160; is a volunteer supported Project Management application. There is no &quot;company&quot; behind this project, it is managed, maintained, developed and supported by a volunteer group and by the users themselves.         <\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/collabtive.o-dyn.de\/\" href=\"http:\/\/collabtive.o-dyn.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">http:\/\/collabtive.o-dyn.de\/<\/a>&#160; unlimited projects and users \u2013 Nice set of users.&#160; but VERY basic set of features. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.project-open.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.project-open.org\/<\/a> &#8211; ]project-open[ is an open-source web-based Project Management \/ Project-ERP software which integrates areas such as CRM, sales, project planning, project tracking, collaboration, timesheet, invoicing and payments. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmine.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.redmine.org<\/a> \u2013 open-source <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twproject.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.twproject.com<\/a>&#160;&#160;
