MacOS, IOS, ChromeOS and Android &#8211; you knew there was a different \/ easier way devices could be managed.\u00a0 \u00a0 Thankfully\u00a0 with the introduction Windows 10, Microsoft provided the capabilities needed to modernize device provisioning and management within their platform.<\/p>\n<p>It has been hard for many early adopters including enterprises, small and medium businesses, vendors, and system integrators but it has also been exciting, refreshing and a much welcome change of pace to the industry.<\/p>\n<h2>Unified Endpoint Management<\/h2>\n<p>Although the term has been around for several years we can finally say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Unified Endpoint Management as a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #686868; font-size: 19px; font-style: italic;\">single platform, user-centric system to provision, de-provision\u00a0 and manage all of your devices through a product of your choice with minimal involvement of IT resources.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I wrote in my initial <a href=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/welcome-to-modern-euc-blog\/\">Welcome to the Modern EUC<\/a> blog post,\u00a0 Disruption\u00a0 ( &#8220;<em>The thing that makes old things obsolete<\/em>&#8221; They have an widely used impressive product.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Unified Endpoint Management Parts<\/h2>\n<p>In order to enable Modern Device Management \/ Unified Endpoint Management the following\u00a0 9 key components are needed:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Anytime \/ anywhere device management (cloud-based management)<\/li>\n<li>Directory Integration<\/li>\n<li>Multiple platform support for device management &amp; enrollment<\/li>\n<li>Self-service Password Resets \/ Multi-factory Authentication<\/li>\n<li>Policy Management<\/li>\n<li>Application Provisioning<\/li>\n<li>Single Sign On<\/li>\n<li>Self-provisioning\u00a0 Catalog<\/li>\n<li>Analytics &amp; Reporting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Some will argue that Security, OS Upgrades and others could also fall into the key UEM requirements but I would say it is evolving&#8230;\u00a0 \u00a0There are many parts, pieces and integration points that are potentially possible between\u00a0 many existing 3rd party products\u00a0 that organizations are not quite ready to\u00a0 part with to go to a single vendor platform.<\/p>\n<h2>UEM Leading Products<\/h2>\n<p>We visit many types and size of business and I would say that today,\u00a0 the leading vendors in this space are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/cloud-platform\/microsoft-intune\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enterprise Mobility &amp; Security\u00a0 (Include Microsoft\u00a0 Intune)<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/workspace-one.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VMware Workspace One\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Please note that Microsoft 365 is more than Unified Endpoint Management.\u00a0 It is license bundle that includes: Windows 10, Office 365 and Enterprise Mobility &amp; Security Suite.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 You can purchase Intune and Azure AD\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/intune\/licenses\">individually<\/a> but the bundle price is much more attractive.\u00a0 \u00a0(for more info, please see post:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/microsoft-365-explained-in-three-pictures\/\">Microsoft 365 Explained In Three Pictures<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Relentless Continuous Improvement<\/h2>\n<p>The amount of change and innovation from both Microsoft and VMware on a monthly bases is simply impressive.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (Look at Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/intune\/whats-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intune&#8217;s monthly change log alone<\/a> )\u00a0 \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 Change is based on the following core principal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Improve end-user experience while reducing complexity<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Any vendor that lacks relentless continuous improvement simply can not compete, and therefore will ultimately be<\/p>\n<h2>We are not there yet<\/h2>\n<p>From what I can see, the road ahead is filled with innovation and change.\u00a0 Organizations that have adopted Modern EUC\u00a0 principals including Modern Device Management\u00a0 are breaking away from the &#8220;chains&#8221; of the heavy burden\u00a0 of traditional PC management are benefiting immensely.<\/p>\n<p>Not only they can manage more \/ better and more securely with a lot less, but they are freeing up key resource to help the business achieve more. Be more strategic.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders in Unified Endpoint Management have strong roadmaps ahead and strong end-user feedback loops which is where many of the ideas for the future are coming from.<\/p>\n<p>I would call out that the next evolution, actually revolution, will be in the application\u00a0 delivery and management space.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Now that devices can be provisioned and managed the focus for us all will be enabling local application virtualization and conteranization technology so that the legacy application dependencies can be self-contained to a package that can be executed without dependency on the OS version.\u00a0 \u00a0 (more on this on a future blog post)<\/p>\n<p>It is an exciting time in the End User Computing
