 {"id":365218,"date":"2017-12-11T12:26:28","date_gmt":"2017-12-11T19:26:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/?p=365218"},"modified":"2022-10-03T13:23:13","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T20:23:13","slug":"windows-autopilot-basics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/windows-autopilot-basics\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Autopilot &#8211; Basics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many people ping me on a weekly basis wanting to know what Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Autopilot is and understand what it means or if they can use it right away..&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft and other vendors are marketing&nbsp; as the new zero-touch deployment experience.<\/p>\n<p>This is what I tell them:<\/p>\n<p>Windows Autopilot is a process&nbsp; not a technology. (It utilizes a lot of existing technologies) -It is the concept of provisioning and managing PCs like we do phones<\/p>\n<p>It was introduced in early November 2017 by Microsoft.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (ie:&nbsp; It is NEW and still in development)<\/p>\n<p>Every machine that has Windows 10 v1703 or better, calls \u201chome\u201d during first time configuration (out-of-box experience), where &#8220;home&#8221; is the Microsoft Store for Business\u2019s Autopilot Registry.<\/p>\n<p>If the machine is \u201cregistered\u201d with Windows Autopilot then it bypasses the standard consumer out-of-box experience and goes directly into<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Asking for Language<\/li>\n<li>Connect to WIFI or network<\/li>\n<li>Presents the branded Company Registration page asking the user to enter their corporate credentials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The process then uses MDM (think: Intune \/ AirWatch\/ Mobile Iron, etc.) enrollment, and the company\u2019s configuration workflow executes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Device redeployment works in a similar way, but needs to be configured.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pre-requisites<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Devices must be registered to the organization&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Company branding needs to be configured on Microsoft Store Portal.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Network connectivity to cloud services used by Windows Autopilot&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Devices have to be pre-installed with Windows 10 Professional, Enterprise or Education, of version 1703 or later&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Devices must have access to the internet&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Azure AD Premium P1 or P2&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Intune or other MDM services to manage your devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What does it mean to register a device?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to register a device In order to register devices, you will need to acquire their hardware ID and register it.<\/p>\n<p>You can execute the Microsoft provided:&nbsp; \u201cGet-WindowsAutopilotInfo\u201d PowerShell script, which will generate a .csv file with the device&#8217;s hardware ID, and then upload to the Microsoft Store for Business.&nbsp; &nbsp;The File contains the following data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Column A: Device Serial Number&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Column B: Windows Product ID<\/li>\n<li>Column C: Hardware Hash&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Multiple devices can be registered in bulk by having multiple rows with device information.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where Can I find more information? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4K4hC5NchbE\">Microsoft\u2019s Windows Autopilot Deployment Overview \/ Demo&nbsp; Short &#8211; 6 minute &#8211;&nbsp; Video<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/deployment\/windows-10-auto-pilot\">Full Windows Autopilot Documentation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people ping me on a weekly basis wanting to know what Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Autopilot is and understand what it means or if they can use it right away..&nbsp; Microsoft and other vendors are marketing&nbsp; as the new zero-touch deployment experience.
