Today I am writing this one about the early days of electricity.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our modern era, the development and deployment of artificial intelligence echo the historical journey of another transformative technology: electricity. As AI integrates into various aspects of our lives, we can draw fascinating parallels from electricity&#8217;s past, marked by innovation, competition, and gradual adoption. The stories of electricity&#8217;s pioneers\u2014Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and George Westinghouse\u2014offer profound insights into how groundbreaking technologies evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Benjamin Franklin: The Spark of Enlightenment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before electricity could be harnessed for practical use, it needed to be understood. Benjamin Franklin stands at the dawn of this journey as an early explorer of electricity\u2019s principles. In the mid-1700s, Franklin conducted experiments that deepened the scientific understanding of electricity, famously capturing lightning in a groundbreaking demonstration of the electrical nature of storms. His work laid the groundwork for others to transform theory into application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond electricity, Franklin&#8217;s penchant for mitigating risk led to another innovation: America&#8217;s first insurance company. Founded in 1752, the Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire was his response to the frequent and devastating fires common in American cities. This concept\u2014pooling resources and spreading risk\u2014introduced protection against unforeseen disasters. Little did he know how relevant this would become just over a century later when electricity itself entered the chat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Power Pioneers and the First Business Models<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast forward to the late 1800s, and electricity had become the frontier of practical innovation. Thomas Edison opened the Pearl Street Station in New York City in 1882, marking the birth of the modern electric utility system. Initially powered by direct current (DC) to illuminate a portion of lower Manhattan, Edison&#8217;s vision went far beyond just creating a working lightbulb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edison realized that to make electricity a viable commercial service, he had to invent the entire ecosystem: power plants, wiring, distribution networks, and crucially, meters to charge customers for usage. He didn&#8217;t just invent the &#8220;product&#8221;\u2014he invented the business model around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Battle for Current: AC vs. DC and the Dark Side of the Tech War<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edison\u2019s system had a major flaw: DC power couldn&#8217;t travel far, meaning you needed a power plant on every block. Enter Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse, whose work on alternating current (AC) revolutionized electrical distribution. Tesla\u2019s development of AC systems enabled electricity to travel over long distances, overcoming the shortcomings of DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sparked the infamous &#8220;War of the Currents.&#8221; Edison, desperate to protect his DC empire, launched a massive smear campaign to convince the public that AC was deadly. He secretly funded the electrocution of stray animals and even pushed for the invention of the electric chair\u2014which ran on AC\u2014to prove his rival&#8217;s technology was a &#8220;killer current.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the PR wars, Tesla and Westinghouse won a massive victory by lighting the 1893 Chicago World\u2019s Fair, stunning millions of visitors. The final climax came in 1895 with the construction of the Adams Power Plant at Niagara Falls. Westinghouse and Tesla proved once and for all that AC could be generated massively and sent over long distances to power entire cities, like nearby Buffalo. Electricity was now a national utility, not just a city novelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Laying the Foundations and the Inevitable Fires<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deployment of electricity didn&#8217;t come without growing pains. Early wiring was notoriously unsafe and caused a massive spike in building fires. In a fascinating historical loop, the fire insurance companies pioneered by Franklin initially refused to insure electrified buildings! This forced electricians and regulators to create standardized safety codes, leading to the creation of the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to test and certify electrical safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reflections and Lessons for Today\u2019s AI Era<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we navigate the AI landscape today, the evolution of electricity provides enlightening parallels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Foundations to Applications:<\/strong>\u00a0Franklin\u2019s early explorations in electricity laid the theoretical groundwork, much like AI\u2019s foundational frameworks and academic research do today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inventing the Business Model:<\/strong>\u00a0Edison didn\u2019t just build the &#8220;bulb&#8221;; he built the meters and systems to bill for it. Today, modern AI companies aren&#8217;t just building models\u2014they are building data centers, cloud APIs, and token-billing meters to charge customers for usage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Safety Wars:<\/strong>\u00a0Edison\u2019s PR campaign against AC mirrors today&#8217;s &#8220;AI safety wars,&#8221; where companies warn about the dangers of rival AI models while downplaying their own flaws.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital Fires and New Standards:<\/strong>\u00a0Just as early electricity caused literal fires that required Franklin&#8217;s insurance and new UL safety standards, today&#8217;s AI industry is creating &#8220;digital fires&#8221; (hallucinations, deepfakes, data breaches).
