The latest move is the rollout of self-service migration for existing <strong>Copilot Studio agents to Microsoft Entra Agent ID<\/strong> \u2014 and while it may sound like a small technical change, it points to something much bigger: AI agents are becoming first-class enterprise identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Microsoft 365 Message Center notification <strong>MC1462458<\/strong>, the gradual rollout began on <strong>August 24, 2026<\/strong>, through Power Platform Advisor. They could authenticate and access resources, but from an identity-governance perspective they essentially looked like applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agent ID changes that model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft describes Agent ID as an identity foundation designed specifically for AI agents, allowing organizations to discover, govern, monitor, and protect agent identities across their environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For new Copilot Studio agents, Microsoft now automatically provisions an Entra Agent ID. Older agents may continue using their original app-registration identities until they are migrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction becomes increasingly important as organizations go from experimenting with a handful of AI assistants to potentially operating <strong>hundreds or thousands of agents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why migrate existing Copilot Studio agents?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real value is governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving an agent to Entra Agent ID brings the agent more directly into Microsoft&#8217;s identity and security ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the benefits Microsoft highlights are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Audit logging in Microsoft Entra ID<\/strong>, providing better visibility into agent authentication activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agent lifecycle management<\/strong>, helping organizations manage agents from creation through retirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integration with Microsoft Entra ID Governance.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Better visibility into connector permissions<\/strong>, with connector permissions appearing as API permissions associated with the agent identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conditional Access targeting<\/strong>, allowing organizations to apply policies based on factors such as network location, device compliance, or risk conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last point is particularly interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As agents begin accessing enterprise systems, calling APIs, invoking workflows, retrieving organizational data, and acting on behalf of users, security teams will increasingly need to answer questions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Which agent accessed this system?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What permissions does that agent have?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Who owns it?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Should it still have access?<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What happens when the employee who created it leaves?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional application registrations weren&#8217;t designed around those questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agent identity governance is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What changed on August 24?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft&#8217;s August 2026 Message Center announcement adds an important operational piece to this transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company began the gradual rollout of <strong>self-service migration through Power Platform Advisor<\/strong> on August 24, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations with eligible agents can use the Power Platform admin experience to identify and migrate older agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft&#8217;s current documentation also states that older agents can be manually migrated using the Power Platform admin center, PowerShell, or Power Platform APIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For administrators, the Power Platform Advisor workflow is intended to make identifying and migrating those agents easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general path described in the Message Center announcement is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Power Platform admin center \u2192 Actions \u2192 Microsoft&#8217;s August 2026 Message Center announcement adds the new Power Platform Advisor self-service migration capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For that reason, organizations planning a migration should check the latest Microsoft documentation and their own Power Platform Advisor experience before designing a migration process around older guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This area is changing rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bigger story: AI agents are becoming first-class enterprise identities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the part of the announcement I find most significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enterprise AI conversation is rapidly moving beyond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Which AI model should we use?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and toward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;How do we safely operate an organization filled with AI agents?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agents won&#8217;t simply answer questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They will increasingly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>access corporate information,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>call APIs,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>execute workflows,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>interact with applications,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>create and modify information,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>communicate with other agents,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and perform tasks on behalf of employees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once agents can act, identity becomes foundational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already understand this concept for humans:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Identity \u2192 Authentication \u2192 Authorization \u2192 Governance \u2192 Monitoring \u2192 Lifecycle<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI agents need essentially the same discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft Entra Agent ID is one example of that transition becoming part of mainstream enterprise infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Agent 365 Fits In<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move to <strong>Microsoft Entra Agent ID<\/strong> is also part of a much bigger picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft is positioning <strong>Agent 365<\/strong> as the centralized control plane for observing, governing, and securing AI agents across the enterprise. Entra provides the identity and access layer, while Agent 365 brings broader visibility, lifecycle management, policy enforcement, and governance across an organization\u2019s growing agent population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That relationship is important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Entra Agent ID answers \u201cWho is this agent, and what can it access?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Agent 365 answers \u201cHow do we manage, govern, monitor, and secure all of our agents at scale?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft\u2019s direction is becoming increasingly clear: as agents become part of everyday work, organizations will need the same disciplines around <strong>identity, ownership, lifecycle, security, compliance, and access controls<\/strong> that they already apply to people and applications. Microsoft\u2019s current Agent 365 guidance specifically ties agent governance to Entra for identity, Defender for security, and Purview for data governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that makes this Copilot Studio migration more than a technical cleanup exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Entra Agent ID gives an agent an enterprise identity.
