The company describes it as a “single, universal agent for work”—one that can answer questions, create content, write and run code, and coordinate work across connected business systems.

Google is not starting this movement. Microsoft Copilot and other AI platforms have already been moving beyond chat toward tools that help people carry out tasks. What makes Google’s announcement interesting is how it brings that direction together: a persistent workplace agent with memory, connected business tools, and the ability to coordinate other agents.

The bigger story is not another chat window—or which company got there first.

It is the shift toward delegation.

Instead of telling AI exactly what to do at every step, the idea is to describe the outcome you want and let the agent plan and carry out the work, within the access and boundaries you provide.

That is a different relationship with software—and Google’s announcement is another step in that broader evolution.

From Answering Questions to Completing Work

Most of us are familiar with the chatbot approach:

Ask a question.

Get an answer.

Copy the result into another application.

Do the next step ourselves.

Google’s announced approach aims to connect those steps. The Gemini agent can plan work, select tools and skills, connect to business systems, and deliver results within the environments where people already work.

Think about the difference between these two requests:

“What should I include in a project status report?”

And:

“Prepare a project status report using the relevant documents and conversations. Identify unresolved issues and create a draft for my review.”

The second is an illustrative example, not a promise that every deployment can already perform that exact workflow. But it captures the change: we are moving from asking for information to assigning an outcome.

Google summarizes the approach as giving the agent “objectives, not instructions.”

What Makes the Gemini Agent Interesting?

The announcement brings several capabilities together. Individually, they may sound familiar. Together, they point toward a more persistent working relationship with AI.

It Keeps Working When You Close Your Laptop

Google says the Gemini agent runs in the cloud and can continue work that takes hours or days, even after you close your laptop. It maintains shared context and memory across the devices and channels you use to access it.

That matters because useful work does not always fit into a single chat session.

The promise is less about getting one fast answer and more about having something continue a defined task while you focus elsewhere.

One Agent Can Coordinate Other Agents

The Gemini agent can create temporary, job-specific sub-agents and coordinate their work, including steps that run in parallel or in sequence.

In plain language, you give the main agent a project, and it can divide the work into smaller assignments.

Google also distinguishes those temporary sub-agents from coworker agents: persistent agents with defined roles, their own identities, storage, and email addresses.

That is an important distinction. An agent created to finish one research task is not the same thing as an ongoing project coordinator that participates in a team’s work.

Memory Becomes Part of the Working Relationship

Google describes four kinds of memory for the Gemini agent:

Memory type

What it means in everyday language

Session

Keeps track of the task currently underway, even if it runs for days.

Semantic

Builds a structured knowledge base from information it encounters.

Procedural

Remembers how work gets done, including reusable skills.

Episodic

Retains a history of what it has done before.

The practical idea is that you should not have to explain the same project, people, and working methods every time you ask for help.

Of course, memory also raises questions: what should an agent retain, who can access it, and how should that information be corrected or removed?

For me, those questions are just as important as the convenience.

It Connects to the Tools Where Work Already Happens

Google’s announcement includes connections to Workspace, Microsoft Office and Teams, Slack, Jira, Git, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and data platforms such as BigQuery and Snowflake. It also describes support for Model Context Protocol, or MCP, servers as another way to connect agents with tools and systems.

This is where the agent concept becomes more practical.

An assistant that only sees a chat conversation has limited context. An agent connected to the appropriate documents, conversations, and business systems has more of what it needs to carry out a useful task.

“Appropriate” is the key word. More access is not automatically better access.

The Agent and the Model Are Separate Choices

One detail stood out to me: Google says the Gemini agent can orchestrate work across both Google’s Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude models, with additional model options planned for the future.

In other words, the agent is the coordinating system. The model underneath it is a separate choice.

Google’s argument is that different tasks call for different models—and that the best model is not always the largest or most expensive one. Its announced Smart Routing capability aims to match workloads with suitable models while managing cost.

My takeaway: the value of an agent is not just the intelligence of one model. It is also how well the system combines context, tools, memory, and execution.

How Does It Compare With Other AI Agents?

Google is not alone in moving from conversation to action.

OpenAI, Grok Bot, Hermes, Claude, and OpenClaw offer different approaches to getting AI to perform work rather than simply describe how to do it. But these are not identical products: some are managed services, while others are open-source systems you can configure and operate.

Here is a brief comparison—not a ranking or a claim that every product can perform the same tasks.

Agent or platform

Main approach

What stands out

Google Gemini agent

A managed, universal workplace agent that connects business context, tools, memory, and other agents.

Its emphasis on persistent coworker identities, Workspace collaboration, cross-system orchestration, and enterprise governance. It launched in private preview.

OpenAI: ChatGPT agent and dots

ChatGPT agent handles delegated tasks using tools such as browsing and code execution; dots extend the approach to always-on agents with ongoing responsibilities.

Dots have their own cloud computers, connect to apps, and can be reached through ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. Rollout depends on plan and market eligibility.

Grok Bot

A team of always-on agents that work across applications and websites using a cloud computer.

The emphasis is on handing projects to AI teammates that continue working after you step away—including in systems without a clean API or MCP connection. It launched in beta.

Hermes Agent

An open-source agent from Nous Research with persistent memory and a built-in learning loop.

It creates and refines reusable skills from experience, supports multiple model providers, and offers terminal, desktop, messaging, and hosted-cloud options.

Claude Cowork

A task-delegation environment that works directly with selected files, tools, and browsers.

You define the goal, Claude completes multi-step work, and you review the result. Plugins and specialized sub-agents extend its capabilities.

OpenClaw

An open-source AI assistant that users can install and configure.

It represents the configurable, user-operated side of the agent landscape, with support for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

The closest comparison to Google’s persistent-agent vision is not just a regular ChatGPT conversation. OpenAI’s dots and Grok Bot also explicitly emphasize agents that remain available and keep working beyond a single interaction.

Hermes approaches the problem from another direction: a reusable, open-source agent that learns workflows over time and can work with different model providers. Claude Cowork emphasizes handing off a defined task across the files and tools you choose.

Google’s distinctive emphasis is the organizational layer: an agent that can serve an individual, participate in a team, and operate under centrally managed identities, permissions, policies, and budgets.

For me, the comparison is less about “Which agent is smartest?” and more about:

“Which operating model fits the work—and how much control do I want over it?”

Personal Assistant—or Member of the Team?

Google describes three ways the Gemini agent can work inside Workspace: personal assistance, proactive delegation, and participation as a team member.

Mode

Google’s announced approach

Personal assistance

Helps with tasks using relevant context from calendars, projects, documents, and teams.

Proactive delegation

Recognizes work that could be delegated and offers an option to hand it off.

Team member

Operates as a coworker agent with its own Workspace account and presence in shared collaboration spaces.

The proactive part deserves clarification. Google’s example is not simply an agent taking over your inbox without asking. It describes recognizing a delegatable request—such as preparing a project-update deck—and giving the user a single-click option to pass it to Gemini.

For coworker agents, Google describes an even more visible presence: an email address, calendar, Drive, and company-directory entry. Team members can add the agent to a Chat space or mention it in a document. Google says these agents act under their own identities and see only the context shared with them.

That makes the idea of an AI “coworker” more concrete, without making it a human employee.

The Enterprise Difference: Permission, Accountability, and Cost

A personal agent experiment and a workplace deployment have different requirements.

For a business, “Can it do the task?” is only the first question.

The next questions are:

What information can it access?

What actions can it take?

Can we see what it did?

Who is accountable for reviewing the result?

How much can it spend?

Google’s announcement addresses these concerns with agent identities, fine-grained permissions, audit trails, sandboxed execution, policy enforcement through Agent Gateway, and project-level spending caps that pause an agent when a limit is reached.

These may be less exciting than a demonstration of an agent creating a presentation. But I think they are central to whether organizations can use agents responsibly.

A system that can take action needs more than intelligence. It needs boundaries—and a way for people to understand and supervise its work.

Announced Does Not Mean Available to Everyone

There is an important distinction between the vision and the rollout.

At launch, the Gemini agent was in private preview for selected enterprise customers. Google indicated that wider availability would follow, including for selected Workspace Business and Enterprise plans, but it was not an immediate release for every Gemini user.

So I would treat the announcement as a direction to watch, not a guarantee that every demonstrated workflow is ready in every organization.

The real test will be how consistently it completes useful work with the right permissions, acceptable costs, and manageable human oversight.

How This Connects to Personal AI Agents

The connection to personal AI agents is straightforward:

We want help that understands the task, remembers relevant context, and can do more than generate a response.

Google’s announcement applies that idea to work inside an organization. It combines individual assistance with shared team roles, connected business systems, and centralized controls.

To me, that is the next question worth exploring.

Not just:

“Can I have an AI assistant?”

But:

“What work am I comfortable delegating—and under what conditions?”

That is where the conversation becomes practical. In evaluating these systems, I would look for a clear objective, suitable access, limits on their actions, and a person who can evaluate the outcome.

My Take

What interests me most is not whether Google has announced the most impressive agent demo.

It is the attempt to make agents part of everyday work rather than another separate tool we have to manage.

The promise is compelling: describe an outcome, let the agent coordinate the steps, and review what comes back. Google’s architecture brings persistent execution, memory, tools, sub-agents, and governance together in support of that approach.

Whether it delivers will depend on reliability and trust—not just capability.

Personal AI agents are having a moment.

Now we are beginning to see what that moment might look like inside the workplace.
