 {"id":6667,"date":"2019-04-23T14:12:18","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T21:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moderneuc.com\/?p=6667"},"modified":"2026-02-18T13:02:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T20:02:27","slug":"modern-device-management-more-than-just-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/modern-device-management-more-than-just-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Modern Device Management: More than Just Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, many companies are moving or seriously considering the move to Modern Device Management (or Modern Management) as their next step of their Digital Transformation Journey.\u00a0\u00a0Most considering the move, have already completed their Windows 10 migrations and are looking for efficiencies to their deployment workflows.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Having said this,\u00a0 \u00a0I get asked on a daily bases:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0\u201cWhat should I consider when moving to Modern Management?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first and most important item to address is a cultural one.\u00a0 Simply said:<\/p>\n<p><strong>All of us need to switch \u201cour current thinking\u201d of how devices are deployed and managed.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let me address a bit more as to why this mind-set-change is\u00a0 important:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cultural Change<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Users need to understand that self-service is the &#8220;new norm&#8221;\n<ul>\n<li>No longer a tech delivers and configures the device<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>IT professionals role have changed when deploying \/ troubleshooting devices:\n<ul>\n<li>New thinking is needed about your deployment, operational workflows, security and device lifecycle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Modern Management means cloud-based.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your Identity is in the cloud (authentication and Authorization) and Administration Console are in the cloud.<\/li>\n<li>Your application delivery process is in the cloud<\/li>\n<li>Your data is sync to the cloud. (no more local data alone)<\/li>\n<li>Your OS updates and applications will be coming from the cloud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Identity on the Cloud<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cloud based authentication \u00a0\/ Authorization to resources are critical to anywhere \/ anytime access to data and applications<\/li>\n<li>Once you have cloud-based authentication \/ authorization it opens up many options including access controls to documents \/ files, single-sign-on, authorization logs and much more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Network configuration impacts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Significant impact on your network topology which may require you to modify your current configuration. Since everything is coming from the cloud (Authentication\/Authorization,\u00a0 OS updates, Applications, and data) \u00a0network design and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Side note:\u00a0\u00a0 there are several options for minimizing network impact including embedded Windows 10 features as well as third-party tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Images no more<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The term \u201cImages\u201d is a legacy terminology. \u2013<br \/>\nDo you ever re-image an iPhone, Android, or Chrome device?\u00a0\u00a0 The answer is NO.<\/li>\n<li>Moving forward, the device OS comes with the device and that is the bases for it.<br \/>\nIf you need redeploy that device, you \u201cRESET\u201d it\u00a0 to be ready to enroll\u00a0 for a new user.<\/li>\n<li>The concept of images gets replaced with \u201cuser profiles\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Data is not only stored locally<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>End-user data is expected to be securely available anywhere anytime<\/li>\n<li>You can do this with tools like OneDrive, DropBox, Box, Sync and several others.<\/li>\n<li>Basically, these tools allow you to either store \/ access data securely on the cloud, and provide the capability of updating and syncing the files \/ folders you choose across devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Applications delivery and updates<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applications delivery is cloud based.<\/li>\n<li>Applications need to be smarter (know when \/ how to update themselves &#8211; aka iTunes \/ PlayStore)<\/li>\n<li>Application need to have minimum impact on base OS<\/li>\n<li>Application installation format\u00a0 is changing from MSI to MSIXs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>No dependency on Device:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If\/ When\u00a0 the device breaks, it typically is within warranty, and a\u00a0 manufacturer tech would be dispatched after end-user reports the issue to the help desk.\u00a0 \u00a0 Response times will depend on your warranty, but the range is anywhere between 4 hours and 48 hours.<\/li>\n<li>If \/ When your device is lost, end-user will inform the help desk which would trigger a lock\/wipe data message to the device as well as an order to dispatch a new device to them.\u00a0 \u00a0When the end-user receives the new device.<\/li>\n<li>All data, applications and permissions\u00a0 are promptly &#8220;restored&#8221;
