 {"id":8012,"date":"2019-06-24T16:47:50","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T23:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moderneuc.com\/?p=8012"},"modified":"2026-02-18T13:02:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T20:02:27","slug":"updating-windows-10-edition-with-autopilot-intune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/updating-windows-10-edition-with-autopilot-intune\/","title":{"rendered":"Updating Windows 10 Edition with Autopilot \/ Intune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As opposed to previous versions of the Microsoft Operating System, where each edition came as a separate ISO, there is only one package for the latest Windows 10 OS that can be &#8220;unlocked&#8221; when activated to have the edition you need.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (there are some restrictions\/requirements based on licensing)<\/p>\n<p>One of the most common questions I get when talking about Modern Device Management is how to upgrade the edition that comes with the device\u00a0 from\u00a0 Pro to Enterprise as part of the enrollment \/ provisioning process.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Deploying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/deployment\/planning\/windows-10-enterprise-faq-itpro\" data-linktype=\"relative-path\">Windows 10 Enterprise<\/a>\u00a0in your organization can now be accomplished with no keys and no reboots.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Starting with Windows 10, version 1703 Windows 10 Pro supports the Subscription Activation feature, enabling users to \u201cstep-up\u201d from Windows 10 Pro to\u00a0<strong>Windows 10 Enterprise<\/strong>\u00a0automatically if they are subscribed to Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This has been available to enterprises since Windows 10 v1703, but now with v1903\u00a0 is\u00a0 available in the Education edition as well.<\/p>\n<p>To understand all of your options the helpful chart below can be found at Microsoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/deployment\/upgrade\/windows-10-edition-upgrades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official documentation at Windows 10 edition upgrade<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"windows-10-edition-upgrade\">Windows 10 edition upgrade Using Intune<\/h3>\n<p>With Windows Autopilot \/ Intune\u00a0 can you apply settings and policies, set up BitLocker, install apps (including 32-bit MSI installers) and even change the Windows edition to Enterprise (if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/windows\/deployment\/windows-10-enterprise-subscription-activation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows Subscription Activation<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The following are the general steps that are needed to make\u00a0 this happen follow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>First, create a Microsoft Intune configuration policy.<\/li>\n<li>In the Azure Portal navigate to Microsoft Intune -&gt; Device Configuration -&gt; Profiles. Click <strong>Create Profile<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Next, create a new\u00a0<strong>Windows 10 and later profile<\/strong>, with a type of Win 10 <strong>Edition Upgrade.<\/strong>\u00a0Click\u00a0<strong>Settings <\/strong>and select <strong>Click\u00a0Edition Upgrade<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the field <em>Edition to upgrade to<\/em>\u00a0select\u00a0<strong>Windows 10 Enterprise<\/strong>. In the\u00a0<em>Product Key<\/em>\u00a0field type in the product key (i.e. MAK). Then click\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>the field\u00a0<em>Edition to upgrade to<\/em>\u00a0select\u00a0<strong>Windows 10 Enterprise<\/strong>. In the\u00a0<em>Product Key<\/em>\u00a0field type in the product key (i.e. MAK). Then click\u00a0<strong>OK<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Next, click\u00a0<strong>Assignments<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>Assign to\u00a0<\/em>menu select\u00a0<strong>All Users &amp; Devices<\/strong> (or
