 {"id":82385,"date":"2009-12-22T16:58:03","date_gmt":"2009-12-23T00:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/infraops.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/22\/sccm-sp2-r2-it-must-of-have-been-the-turkey\/"},"modified":"2022-09-26T14:00:38","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T21:00:38","slug":"sccm-sp2-r2-it-must-of-have-been-the-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/sccm-sp2-r2-it-must-of-have-been-the-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"SCCM SP2 R2 \u2013 it must of have been the Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Article by Danny Knox<\/p>\n<p>It must have been \u201cfeast induced drowsiness\u201d that cause me to miss this.\u00a0 Had to be.<\/p>\n<p>I was trolling for technology webcasts and found one from thanksgiving week (2009) for SCCM &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/msevents.microsoft.com\/CUI\/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=1032428201&amp;culture=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technical Overview: System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 and R3 (Level 200)<\/a> that among other things covers these gems:<\/p>\n<p><b>Improved Client Policy Evaluation in SP2<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Faster policy processing\n<ul>\n<li>Before SP2, policy download was queued locally for <u>2 minutes<\/u> before processing<\/li>\n<li><strong><u><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This 2 minute delay has been removed in Service Pack 2<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>More efficient software distribution configured to run at user logon\n<ul>\n<li>Before SP2, user policy requests were <u>not downloaded for 10 minutes<\/u> after user logon event<\/li>\n<li>This caused a delay in User\/Group targeted advertisements<\/li>\n<li>A common scenario is an <strong>App-V distribution<\/strong> environment where User or Security Group targeting is used<\/li>\n<li><strong><u><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This 10 minute delay has been removed in Service Pack 2<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><u>User or Security Group targeted advertisements are instantly available after user logon in Service Pack 2<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can I get an AMEN?\u00a0 Someone at Microsoft needs to be on the tower shouting this out to the masses.\u00a0 Since Redmond is not, I will!\u00a0 Albeit, my tower is a bit smaller but none the less I\u2019M SHOUTING!!!<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t tell you how many MDOP POC\u2019s I\u2019ve done where the client wants to use SCCM to deliver App-V packages but has already seen the almost immediate delivery of App-V Management Server App-V packages and wanted to know why SCCM can\u2019t do that.\u00a0 It can now.\u00a0 Just about fills my holiday wish list.\u00a0 Well, there is the hope of bringing back Zero Touch for App-V self provisioning of pre-approved App-V applications and the ability to make request to a manager for apps the user needs but doesn\u2019t have.\u00a0 I can wait.<\/p>\n<p>One of the other items that sort of sticks out is this one &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SMS 2003, time to migrate<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Mainstream Support ends Jan 2010<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nWhat does that mean?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No-charge Problem Resolution Support ends<\/li>\n<li>We no longer accept product design change requests (DCRs) or provide new feature functionality<\/li>\n<li>We no longer provide new non-security hotfixes without enrollment in Extended Hotfix Support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sort of?\u00a0 You know how not so good financial and political news is made available to the public at 3 pm on a Friday?\u00a0 That\u2019s what this feels like to all the folks that got their SMS 2003 environments up and running and had to do so from how to we say this, a not so well tuned previous SMS product of whose vintage will not be named here.\u00a0 While you were enjoying your \u201cfeast induced drowsiness\u201d you get this update about end of support for SMS 2003.\u00a0 I hope you\u2019re awake now.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for SCCM you might entertain propping a parallel Windows 2008 Server to then install SCCM SP2 R2 into for a migration instead of an upgrade to SMS.\u00a0 This is one of our preferred method at CompuCom.\u00a0 Taking a deployment approach by department you can remove the older SMS clients and seed by \u2018collections of computers\u2019 from SCCM that receive the new SCCM client thereby keeping SMS 2003 up while the migration is in progress until the last device has been migrated.<\/p>\n<p>Plan now folks \u2013 before you make that SMS 2003 support call and are asked where to bill the call to.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Article by Danny Knox It must have been \u201cfeast induced drowsiness\u201d that cause me to miss this.\u00a0 Had to be.
