 {"id":849,"date":"2012-09-15T14:28:42","date_gmt":"2012-09-15T14:28:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/?p=849"},"modified":"2016-02-29T16:47:02","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T16:47:02","slug":"initial-thoughts-on-windows-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/initial-thoughts-on-windows-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Initial Thoughts on Windows 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been using Windows 8 on my primary laptop for about 30 days now, and have been very pleased with the experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; display: inline;\" src=\"http:\/\/t1.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTtzwRcWB9b1wZ1Ft19Zs46uET7871_7-TtOnIttX047OigbAtH\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"111\" align=\"right\" \/>I am a semi-typical knowledge worker \/\u00a0 technology consultant who travels a lot.\u00a0\u00a0 My office is wherever I can find a small desk area and an internet connection.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My laptop is configure in a way that I have several Virtual Machines working at the same time, one for the corporate image, another for my personal use (with Windows 8 and Office 2013) and one for a bit of fun and dev.work, (Ubuntu 12.04)<\/p>\n<p>It took me\u00a0 a bit to get\u00a0use-to the new interface, but once I got the idea,\u00a0 it was smooth sailing.<\/p>\n<p>Part of my goal was to look at how application \/ drivers and device compatibility was going to impact my migration process.\u00a0\u00a0 Pleased to report that I have found no application, device\u00a0or driver compatibility issues.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This has been a big surprise, as so much of my work has been focused on these topics in the past few years, migrating people to Windows 7. (I am pretty sure you are aware how involved this has been! )<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I have to admit, that the primary UI interface has been the desktop. \u00a0Metro works fine, but I just have not found it very useful on my keyboard-mouse laptop.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I have missed the Start Button a bit but not as much as I thought I would.\u00a0 Just a matter of getting used to doing things slightly different..<\/p>\n<p>Things I Like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>remarkably easy to install and update (from win7)<\/li>\n<li>Boot time:\u00a0\u00a0 whether from hybernation state or full boot &#8211; WOW \u2013 It is super fast!\u00a0 This I love!\u00a0 it takes less time than saying: \u201c<em>superfragilistic expialidocious<\/em>\u201c \u2013 It\u2019s nice.<\/li>\n<li>Although at first, it did not make sense, the integration with the Microsoft account is very nice.\u00a0\u00a0 (especially with SkyDrive is super helpful)<\/li>\n<li>I miss the start-button, but have gotten use to hit the Window key and type the next app I need..<\/li>\n<li>Office 2013 is very nice\u2026\u00a0 Microsoft Office team has improved the product considerably \u2013 I will write something up on this topic separately<\/li>\n<li>Internet Explorer 10 on the desktop is speedy.\u00a0 Have found no issues with web-site or web apps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Things I do not use or yet \u201cget\u201d :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cformerly known as\u201d\u00a0 Metro interface\u00a0 &#8212; Metro works fine, but it I find it that it excels on touch-screen devices.<\/li>\n<li>How do you close an app in the Metro Interface (ie: Adobe PDF, or IE) There is not X or close \u201cbuttons\u201d in the Metro.<\/li>\n<li>Regarding IE10\u00a0 within the Metro interface:\u00a0\u00a0 It is very nice to look at, but I have found it a bit impractical as I can not doe multiple tabs, or windows\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One last thing:\u00a0 I can\u2019t use Snip to take a picture of\u00a0 a region if the Metro interface.\u00a0 Checked the Microsoft App Store, and was not able to find anything to do screen shorts of it..
