 {"id":952,"date":"2012-12-21T08:00:23","date_gmt":"2012-12-21T08:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/?p=952"},"modified":"2022-09-26T11:57:01","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T18:57:01","slug":"android-ios-platform-os-version-targeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/android-ios-platform-os-version-targeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Android \/ iOS  Platform OS version  targeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From a development point of view it is interesting to see the difference between the Android and iOS\u00a0 versions needed to be supported\u2026<\/p>\n<p>While researching, I ran into an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dazeinfo.com\/2012\/10\/03\/ios-6-adoption-rate-is-quite-better-than-androids-jelly-bean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 2012 <\/a>article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dazeinfo.com\/2012\/10\/03\/ios-6-adoption-rate-is-quite-better-than-androids-jelly-bean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on dazeinfo.com<\/a>a\u00a0 which mentions that while\u00a0 iOS 6 Adoption Rate is about 60% iPhones Updated To iOS 6 vs. about 2% of Android have Jelly Bean (v4.x).<\/p>\n<p>This made me think a bit\u2026.\u00a0\u00a0 How can this be ?\u00a0 Is this possible?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How can Android platform be so fragmented??\u00a0 Why don\u2019t I have Jelly Bean on my HTC phone?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A few theories came to mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Android OS distribution is controlled by the carriers<\/li>\n<li>There are too many older phones that are not compatible with Jelly Bean<\/li>\n<li>Too many versions too quickly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A couple of disclaimers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That I know of, there is no definitive place to get Apple iOS version statistics.\u00a0\u00a0 Several developers have shared their stats with the world, so iOS column is purely estimated guesses.<\/li>\n<li>Google\/Android on the other hand does publish regular updates on their OS Version penetration\/distribution.<\/li>\n<li>Data is from different sources and dates may not match exactly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>According to<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.netmarketshare.com\/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=8&amp;qpcustomd=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NetMarketshare<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>, as of November 2012,\u00a0 the statistics (based on visitors to their partner network sites)\u00a0 for tablet\/mobile Operating System\u00a0 are:<\/ul>\n<p><b>iOS:\u00a0 61.10%<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Android:\u00a0\u00a0 28.02%<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>But the real truth is\u00a0 that is much more fragmented than this\u2026. This slide from one of Apple\u2019s keynotes back in June 2012 summarized the challenge, and importance of the topic:<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jorgep.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: segmentation.\u00a0\u00a0 I understand that\u00a0 numbers on the newer versions will improve significantly as people replace their phones, but I can only hope Google, manufactures and carriers all
