OneNote – The New Old Name

Starting October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for OneNote for Windows 10, making it read-only. The ONLY officially supported version moving forward is simply called OneNote—no year or edition attached. Previously known as “OneNote 2016,” this desktop app is included with Microsoft 365, Office 2019, Office 2021, and Office 2024, and is also available as a free standalone download.
OneNote, or sometimes called OneNote desktop app, it’s the only Windows version that will continue receiving updates and feature enhancements beyond the cutoff date.

OneNote Availability and Version Consolidation
Microsoft currently offers several versions of OneNote, but they are consolidating around a single desktop version:
- OneNote (Desktop App)
This version is included with Microsoft 365, Office 2019, Office 2021, and Office 2024. It is also available as a free standalone download. It supports full notebook export, advanced features, and long-term support. - OneNote for Windows 10
This version came pre-installed with Windows 10 but will reach end-of-support on October 14, 2025. After that date, it will become read-only. Microsoft recommends switching to the desktop version. - OneNote for Mac, iOS, Android, and Web
These versions are free and available through app stores or via OneNote.com. They are suitable for viewing and editing notebooks but do not support full export or advanced backup features.
Microsoft has confirmed that the desktop version of OneNote will be the only Windows client receiving ongoing feature updates. Users still relying on the Windows 10 version should transition to the desktop app to ensure continued access and functionality. OneNote for Windows 10 (the UWP app) will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. After that date, it will become read-only, meaning you can view notes but won’t be able to edit or sync them. The company is consolidating around the OneNote desktop app, which is now simply called “OneNote” or “OneNote (M365)”. This version is actively developed, receives feature updates, and is included with Microsoft 365, Office 2019/2021/2024, and also available as a free download.
